Saturday 1st October 2011 was the date for the MNDA Merseyside Autumn Ball at Formby Hall. The night was a huge success raising over £5000. Over 230 people attended, and enjoyed fantastic entertainment from Ed Alexander, pianist, and singer Claire Simonsen. Lancashire Life Photographer attended, So we hope some party goers are featured soon! A huge thank you to everybody who attended, and joined in the raffle and auction, and made the night a great successs.

The photo below is of Committee members Marge Carey and Peter Marrs being presented with a cheque for the Branch from USDAW (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers). Pictured with Marge and Peter are USDAW President Jeff Broom and USDAW General Secetary John Hannett.
Liverpool Community College named MNDA as their 'charity of the year' following the death of their colleague Charlie Smith who was a tutor in the Engineering department at the college. Charlie's popularity amongst his many friends at the college meant that they were inspired to hold a number of events to raise awareness of MND and money which they chose to donate to the local Merseyside Branch. The events included a Talent night and a walk along the canal at Garstang and were attended by many staff and students and representatives from the branch. At the end of the academic year, a presentation of a cheque was made to Sheila Morley (Chair), Alun Owen and Keith Ten-Pow (Committee Members) on Friday 29th July. Total amount raised? Over £5,000! A fantastic amount that will do a lot to help people living with MND in Merseyside. Our huge thanks go to the staff and students of Liverpool Community College, especially the Marketing Manager David Scanlan and the Principal Elaine Bowker, for their amazing efforts and generosity.

On 18 July 50 jolly cyclists set off in adverse conditions from the Eco centre Southport to Formby, to raise money and awareness for MND. After completing the first 8 miles we all had a much needed lunch in the Grapes in Formby. We then cycled back to Southport in lovely sunshine. Here are a selection of photos from the day. Sponsor money is still being collected, watch this space for total collected. We all had a fantastic and tiring day. Special thanks to Sarah for the organising a brilliant day.

Pictured are the walkers who turned out for the Branches Annual Walk to D'Feat on Saturday 18 June 2011. We walked from the Anglican cathedral down to the Albert Dock - about 2 miles. Hopefully with our t shirts, balloons and flyers we raised awareness among the shoppers and tourists. We spoke to shoppers as we made our way through the city centre. This year we were not granted permission to collect, however many of the walkers were sponsored and raised funds for the Branch. The weather was pleasant and we all had an enjoyable time. Sheila Morley publicised the Walk the day before on Radio Merseyside.
This year Liverpool Community College has chosen MND Merseyside as their Charity of the year. The college chose MND Merseyside in memory of Charlie Smith, a Gas Lecturer at the Colleges Vauxhall site, who had MND. One of the events they organised was a Talent Show that was held on Thursday 24th March. Sarah and Moira from the committee were invited along to represent the branch, and Sarah was on the panel of judges.
Charlie's friends and family attended what turned out to be a fantastic show, it was a shame there was only one winner as all the acts were marvellous. Jack Chloe and Beverley from the Enrichment Team worked very hard to organise the show and raffle. The night raised over £500 for the Association.

Pictured following completing the Liverpool half marathon is Bob Murray, a friend and colleague of Charlie Smith. Bob raised £526 for the Liverpool Community college fund for MND Merseyside. An amazing effort. Bob is pictured with his son Andrew who also completed the half marathon.

A race night was held by the Merseyside branch on Friday 6 May. Organised by Peter Marrs in memory of his brother, it raised over £900 for the charity.

Pictured right is Keith Ten Pow with his certificate received for being nominated for a People in Action award, this award is hosted by Land Securities Group. Keith was nominated by Gordon Lee, Technical Services Manager at Land Securities, St Johns Shopping Centre. Keith, who has Motor Neurone Disease and is confined to a wheelchair, has been collecting in St Johns for the past five years.
Gordon said in his nomination, "Keith is very popular with the regular shoppers within St Johns and no matter what the weather holds, he always seems to arrive at the centre. I think the St Johns shoppers, retail staff, service providers and Land Securities staff are all richer people just by having met Keith."
Sarah Milner did a Boxing Day sponsored swim at Llandudno and raised £548. Here are the photographs...

The above photograph shows (from left to right) Club Captain Roy Clamp, Lady Captain Veronica Caulton and Edwin Longfellow, Seniors' Section Honorary Secretary, presenting a cheque for £400 to Alun Owen, Branch Secretary for the Merseyside Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
The money was raised in a recent Golf Event at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on behalf of branch member (and Golf Club member) Marge Carey. The money will be used in the Merseyside area to help support those people living with Motor Neurone Disease.
MND is a rare condition that affects approximately 5000 people in the UK at any one time and the 90+ branches around the country raise funds to increase awareness, pay for research and meet the needs of everyone affected by Motor Neurone Disease. Further information of the branch's work can be obtained from the branch secretary, Alun Owen on 07711 308441.

A number of members of staff from Premier Wealth Management, the Commerce Park based Investment Management Group, recently completed a 15 mile walk for charity. The fund raisers set off from Scarisbrick and walked the 15 miles along the canal to Wigan. Overall the group raised over £500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association through sponsorship and corporate support.
Karen Morgan, Office Manager, is pictured presenting the cheque to Sheila Morley from the Merseyside branch of the Motor Neurone Association, together with other members of staff who took part.
"I don't think I could have ever imagined that I would have been able to complete a 15 mile walk" said Hayley Chadwick, an Administrator for the Firm. "In the first few miles, I really did wonder what I had let myself in for!" Wendy Lunt, Accountant, also added "the first 10 miles were ok, but the last 5 miles killed me!"
Premier Wealth Management is committed to supporting both national and local charities through its charitable foundation.
Following our Dad 'Dave' devastating diagnosis of MND on the 4th February 2010. We decided as a family that we were going to try and keep as positive as possible and take everyday as it comes.
A few days after the diagnosis my sister and I were both looking at the MND Association Website to find that we could get involved with fundraising. This seemed like a brilliant idea to raise awareness for the charity, as a lot of people who we told about our Dad, they didn't seem to exactly what the disease involved and certainly didn't know that there is currently no cure.
Firstly, it was my sister (Amy Campbell) and myself (Katie Campbell) who arranged to complete the skydive and aimed to raise £800.00 for MND Research. Shortly after we had booked the jump, our close friend (Samantha Evans) asked whether she could be involved and we were so happy that she was prepared to jump out of the plane with us for such a worthy cause and that is now so close to our hearts.
We were originally meant to complete the skydive on Sunday 18th April 2010, but unfortunately we could not do so due to the Icelandic Volcanic Ash Cloud, which has drifted our way. We completed the 14,000ft skydive on Friday 23rd April 2010, consisting of a 10,000ft freefall. The experience was absolutely amazing and not only did we reach our original target, we have currently raised £2471.00 (on and offline).
We would be truly grateful for any further donations on
www.justgiving.com/amy-and-katie-campbell.
We would just like to say a huge thank you to our family, friends, colleagues and to the people that we do not even know that have donated. Without all these kind people we would not have been able to raise such a fantastic amount of funds and awareness.
